NC Legislative Update

Fetzer Strategic Partners

Once again, it is our honor to represent you at the NC General Assembly.

Currently the General Assembly is conducting only committee meetings while members prepare for the upcoming March primary and for short session to begin in April.

NC Earns Top Accolade

Site Selection Magazine ranked North Carolina as the #1 state for Workforce Development.  The State had already been named the #1 place to do business by CNBC in 2025.

No Legislative Budget – Still

Neither the Republican-controlled House nor Senate have been able to reach a compromise on a budget for 2025-2027.  The chambers remain at odds over further tax reduction triggers.  Compromise is not likely until the body returns for short session after the March primaries.

Data Center Approval

The Stokes County Commission approved a rezoning request for nearly 1,850 acres along the Dan River this week for a 5-6 million square foot data center.  Data center construction requires a high volume of concrete and the American Cement Association predicted in June that the “U.S. will need approximately 1-million metric tons of cement to construct data centers that will house Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology over the next few years.”  CRMCA members attended the meeting to show support and CRMCA’s Jessica Wilson delivered remarks in favor of the project promoting responsible development and critical infrastructure needs.

FEMA-Helene Funding

This week, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced an additional $116 million in federal funding to support North Carolina’s recovery from Hurricane Helene.  Of note, $34.7 million goes to North Carolina Department of Transportation for road and bridge repairs across more than 300 sites in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Caldwell, Henderson, Mitchell, Surry, and Watauga counties.
