Last week’s Metrolina CEC focused on concrete’s role in the circular economy. Jessica Wilson, CRMCA’s Director of Technical Services & Education, explained how the industry can turn waste into resources. “Given concrete’s $600 billion annual global revenue contribution and its resource intensity,” Wilson said, “we must embrace circularity by using reclaimed water, recycled aggregates, and investing in innovative materials to cut carbon emissions and create new revenue streams.”
Attendees then toured The Innovation Barn with Amy Aussieker, Executive Director of Envision Charlotte. Aussieker showcased circularity in action, presenting technologies and organizations—both nonprofit and for-profit—dedicated to waste reduction and community benefits. The Barn, dubbed “ground zero for Circular Charlotte,” is a collaboration with the City of Charlotte to advance the circular economy. It features businesses, zero-waste initiatives, and educational spaces for circular projects. The tour also highlighted recycled glass as a potential pozzolan, illustrating a relevant waste stream opportunity for the concrete industry.
