Environmental Awards

The CRMCA Environmental Awards include the Environmental Excellence Award (EEA) and the Environmental Improvement Award (EIA). The Environmental Excellence Award is presented annually, by category, to the CRMCA producer member plants that have best demonstrated environmental excellence and innovative management. The Environmental Improvement Award (EIA) recognizes considerable environmental improvements to a plant where total environmental excellence may not be achieved. Any plant that has made a significant environmental improvement which has positively impacted operations and/or community relations is eligible for this award. Examples include improvements to air emissions or water discharges, site aesthetics, noise reduction, creative training, environmental procedures and implementation of an Environmental Management System.

CRMCA strives to recognize the overall stewardship and environmental efforts of our member companies through these annual awards. We proudly recognize CRMCA Producer Members who:

Make outstanding contributions to preserving and protecting the environment.
Provide environmental leadership for the ready mixed concrete industry.
Maintain sound environmental management practices in their operations.
Install state-of-the-art environmental equipment and/or implement environmentally friendly plant procedures.

Eligibility: Any CRMCA Producer Member may submit application(s) for fixed plant location(s) in the Carolinas. Members may submit applications for the Environmental Excellence Award by Category (A or B) and the Environmental Improvement Award by Category (A or B) for any plant. Note: Plants which have won an EEA are not eligible again for five (5) years from date of award. Additionally, those plants that are submitted for the EEA that do not win may, at the discretion of the judges, receive an Environmental Excellence Award, Honorable Mention with a maximum of 3 Honorable Mention Awards per category. A concrete plant submitted for the EEA that does not win will be evaluated for the EIA if the entry documents environmental improvements made to the plant during the current awards time period.

Categories: The Environmental Excellence and the Environmental Improvement Awards will be granted for each category. The two categories are determined by the number of ready mixed trucks that are assigned to the plant location on a permanent basis as Category A: 1 to 10 ready mixed trucks and Category B: Over 10 ready mixed trucks.

Judging Process: All entries will be judged on merit, submitted information and presentation. Judges reserve the right to not award any category where the minimum standards established have not been met.

Summary Statement:

In 500 words or less highlight the environmental excellence and/or innovate management that you feel makes this plant/location award worthy. (Information to include is listed below but the items are not required nor limited to the list).

• Compliance History: Discuss the environmental compliance history of the plant. Explain in detail any environmental violations received in the last 2 years and the corrective action implemented. List internal, local, state or national recognition and/or awards.

• Site Aesthetics: Discuss the housekeeping, beautification, and landscaping of the site, and the subsequent maintenance.

• Training and Plant Procedures: Describe the nature of environmental training, particularly any training, inspections, procedures, environmental audits, equipment etc., that exceeds the minimum regulatory requirements.

• Water Quality Management: Discuss storm water management structures and the monitoring of storm water runoff. Confirm the existence of an SWP3 at the plant and review the water recycling process and equipment, if applicable.

• Solid & Hazardous Waste Management and Hazardous Materials Management: Discuss the management of waste materials at the concrete plant, including but not limited to returned concrete materials (excess concrete, pit fines, etc.), solid waste, used oil and tires, hazardous wastes, etc. Hazardous materials management might include, but not be limited to, EPRA reporting requirements (Tier II and/or Tri reporting), storage and disposal practices, etc.

• Air Quality Management: Discuss procedures for handling dust at the storage silos, batchers, loading points, and fugitive dust from roadways and stockpiles. Also explain inspection, maintenance, and any air monitoring procedures for air quality control.

• Petroleum & Admixtures Management: Explain oil storage and handling procedures. Discuss the oil storage tank capacities and the secondary containment of the tanks, where available. Define truck fueling procedures and identify the procedures for spill prevention and response. Confirm the existence of a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan, where required.

• Community Relations: Explain any good neighbor practices, noise reduction, or any other voluntary environmental related efforts or special projects.
