The Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) presented the second episode of its Concrete + Conservation series, “Protection,” during the opening keynote at ASPIRE in Asheville, North Carolina, introducing the series’ exploration of the built and natural environments to a regional audience of architects and design professionals.

Established by the AIA state chapters of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, ASPIRE brings together more than 600 architects and design professionals for three immersive days of education, connection, and inspiration. Through dynamic presentations, behind-the-scenes tours, and curated experiences, the conference provides attendees with new ideas and practical tools to advance their work, leadership, and businesses.

ASPIRE provided a meaningful setting to share the next chapter of Concrete + Conservation.

The CRMCA series explores the intersection of the built and natural environments and how concrete, thoughtful design, and material innovation can help strengthen communities, support ecosystems, and preserve the places that connect us.

Episode 2, “Protection,” turns to the Carolina coast, where water has shaped not only the landscape, but generations of culture and community. The episode explores how concrete can work alongside natural systems through living shorelines, oyster reef restoration, pervious concrete, living seawalls, and resilient building systems. Featured CRMCA members include Native Shorelines, a Davey Company, and S&W Ready Mixed Concrete Co. LLC.

Showcased before the architectural community at ASPIRE, Protection encouraged individuals to consider an important question: How can the materials we specify today help protect the communities, ecosystems, and cultural heritage we want to carry forward?
