We are proud to recognize Chandler Concrete Co. as the Project of the Year Award recipient for their exceptional work on the Laurel Fork Bridge Replacement along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This project masterfully blends historical preservation with modern engineering. Paying tribute to the original 1939 bridge while delivering a stronger, more resilient structure for generations to come.

Designed with three spans, the new bridge’s substructure was built to closely mirror the look and feel of the historic original. Its precast concrete segmental superstructure, built using the balanced cantilever method, ensures enhanced strength and long-term durability. To maintain its classic character, the railing replicates the original California-style design, complete with a 9-inch curb and 6- to 8-foot post spacing. A graphite color pigment was added to the concrete rails, providing an aged finish that beautifully echoes the 1939 aesthetic.

Project Highlights:
• Precast concrete segmental design using the balanced cantilever method
• Substructure crafted to reflect the historic 1939 bridge
• California-style railings with graphite pigment for an aged, authentic appearance
• Hydration stabilizer used for precise control of concrete set times
• Successful completion despite major weather challenges including Hurricane Helene and multiple ice storms

Innovation and resilience defined this project from start to finish. Despite severe weather disruptions and difficult site access, the team coordinated tirelessly to keep the work on track—delivering a bridge that now supports safe, efficient travel with an approximate 40-minute crossing time.

As General Manager of North Carolina Jimmy Owen shared, “This project enhanced The Blue Ridge Parkway by taking new concrete with new ways and means and making it look like 1939. This project opened a section of the Parkway for millions of tourists traveling in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.”

Congratulations to Chandler Concrete Co. on this impressive achievement and their dedication to honoring both the past and the future through exceptional craftsmanship.
