The CEC Chapter of the Year and CRMCA Promoter of the Year awards are presented to that Chapter and individual who puts forth the greatest efforts in the promotion of our industry as a whole. It quickly became apparent that this year there were many Chapters and individuals who put forth a great deal of effort to promote our industry. Therefore, the CRMCA staff decided that multiple awards would be presented to those Chapters and individuals who “stood out” from the crowd.
The awards for CRMCA Promoter of the Year were presented to:
• Sean Varner, LaFarge NA: Sean’s untiring efforts were unseen by many, but beneficial to all. Not only serving as cement liaison for the Triad CEC Chapter, Sean spent many hours setting up and coordinating meetings with local designers and enlisted the help of the CRMCA to meet with them to discuss the benefits of concrete parking lots, pervious concrete and how concrete can contribute to LEED points. Sean also obtained an invitation for the CRMCA to make a presentation to the USGBC-Triad Chapter and is instrumental in maintaining the very strong relationship with NCA&T’s Civil Engineering program.
• Eddie Deaver, Holcim: Eddie’s participation in the CRMCA doesn’t stop at his work on the Technical Committee. Eddie is also the Midlands CEC Chapter cement liaison and often combines responsibilities in both of his roles to benefit the industry. Eddie has presented round robin results to many CEC chapters and actively participates in many other Chapters than just the one of which he is the liaison. Eddie was instrumental in putting together a team from the Midlands Chapter to host, cross promote and hold the first-ever concrete pumping seminar.
• Nick Cox, Ready Mixed Concrete Company: Not many Chapter Coordinators come into their position with the energy which Nick brought to the Triangle Chapter. His first task was to coordinate a meeting with all local producer executives to discuss the future of his Chapter. Once a plan was presented to those executives, and their buy-in was achieved, Nick worked relentlessly to make sure that his Chapter achieved each and every goal set in that meeting. Nick’s efforts were instrumental in taking a Chapter at the verge of closing and helping it to “rise from the ashes” much like the mascot from a neighboring University, Elon.
The awards for CRMCA CEC Chapter of the Year were presented to:

• Triangle CEC Chapter: With the help of a dedicated Chapter Coordinator, buy-in from local producer executives and support from all local producer and associate members, the Triangle CEC Chapter was able to accomplish something that very few Chapters are able to do...setting and meeting all of their Chapter goals for the year. The Triangle Chapter represents the second largest metropolitan market in the Carolinas (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Burlington) and was in danger of closing due to lack of participation (not attendance). Under the guidance of a determined Chapter Coordinator and support from all local producer members, they were able to set four primary goals and achieve them all. Additionally, they decided to go above-and-beyond those goals and run a booth at the USGBC-Triangle Chapter NC Green tradeshow. This is the perfect example of what our Chapters can accomplish with strong leadership and buy-in and support from local producer member executives!
• Midlands CEC Chapter: The Midlands CEC Chapter for the second year in a row achieved a major accomplishment; they did the most with the least. The Midlands CEC Chapter (Columbia/Lexington/Orangeburg) is one of the smallest Chapters in attendance, but one of the largest in activity. With an average attendance of about nine industry professionals, producer and associate members included, the Midlands CEC Chapter over the past two years has set lofty goals and worked very diligently to achieve them. This year’s primary goal was to put together and host the first-ever concrete pumping seminar. This event, which reached over 150 people, was very successful and has led to a second event of its kind being scheduled for 2009 in the Triangle CEC Chapter. This was just one of five events in which the Midlands CEC Chapter participated in or held in 2008.
Congratulations to all of those who won awards for industry promotion in 2008. The CRMCA would like to extend our most sincere and deepest appreciation to those producer member executives for allowing your employees to serve as Chapter Coordinators in 2008. Without your support of our promotion efforts, none of this would be possible. The CRMCA would also like to extend our most sincere and deepest appreciation to all of those producers and associate members who contributed their time, talents and resources to making all of our promotion events a success in 2008 and look forward to your continued support of promotion activities in 2009.
